Sick, sick, sick

Friday, April 30th, 2004

For the first time ever yesterday I was almost physically sick after reading a rather gruesome killing in Charlie Higson’s book Full Whack. I was reading it on the tube and had to get off to recover!

In the same way as I can’t continue to watch Reservoir Dogs after the ear cutting scene I doubt I’m going to be able to finish Full Whack; which is a shame as until that point I was enjoying it. Ho hum. I doubt I’ll be reading anything else of Charlie’s as apparently they are all pretty gruesome.

Lack of Practise

Wednesday, April 28th, 2004

Oh dear. Whilst we had a good rehearsal last night going through stuff for the first gig of this year’s banding “season” at the Lemsford Village Fete on Monday, I felt completely knackered at the end. I’m putting this down to a serious lack of home practise over the past 3-4 weeks as I’ve been very busy at work and at home. Now things have started to settle down abit, the decorator’s gone and the DSL is in place perhaps I’ll find some time for it again.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to Monday’s gig which will be at St. Johns School in Lemsford, Hertfordshire.

DIY Telecoms

Wednesday, April 28th, 2004

Way hey! After much aggravation I’ve managed to rewire my internal phone network at home to move the DSL downstairs since the spare bedroom is now being turned into a nursery. In the end it was very simple; isn’t it always? But the pain was in trying everything first before checking that an existing, BT installed cable actually worked! Anyway it all works now and it’s all nicely cabled up and pegged down so that’ll please Louise.

In doing the job I need to drill a hole through a double thickness cavity wall (it used to be an external wall) so I hired a SDS drill and very long drill bit to do the job. £700 worth of drill did the job in less than 2 minutes, though I still had to hire it for the whole day! Then the decorator comes in and says: “Oh, you could’ve borrowed mine”!

Just got to wait for the new desk now, should be here on Saturday, so more DIY fun to follow.

Decorators and DSL

Thursday, April 22nd, 2004

It’s been a while since I posted here, mainly because things have been manic at home and at work. Things seem to be settling down again though.

One of the things that’s been happening at the Wiley household is that we’ve had decorators in to prepare the spare bedroom for our new arrival. The date we’ve been given is May 11th and we’ve finally come up with a boy’s name. So if it’s a boy he will be Isaac James, and a girl, she will be Eva Mai.

With the decorators in we’ve had to move the PC and desk to our garden room downstairs but we’ve left the DSL router and server laptop in the room and asked the decorator to work around it. This he has done but there has been some downtime. Unfortunately it occurred whilst we were aware and I wasn’t able to rectify it until we got back, so it looks like 4 days were lost. However, I don’t think it was down to anything the decorator did.

I’ve also been working out how to bring the DSL from the phone point in the bedroom down to the garden room. There are plenty of phone sockets in the garden room, but these are connected to a now disconnected second phone line. What I’ve done is snipped the second phone line at the back of the house where it goes under the soffits and fed this into the air grill of the bedroom and joined it to some internal cable that runs into the phone socket. At the moment it doesn’t work but I think that this is because I need to put a splitter on the phone sockets downstairs. I’ll try this tonight and see how I get on.

It seems quite an odd arrangement as the DSL is on a different wire pair than the phones. Don’t know why BT installed it this way as I thought the point of DSL was that it could all run over the same pair.
